The “agent bank” of the stablecoin era: Augustus’s $180 million funding and the cleanup infrastructure ambition behind it
On July 21, 2026, the fintech company Augustus, which is building a “Global Dollar Bank,” announced that it has completed a $180 million Series B funding round, valuing it at $1 billion. The round was led by Tiger Global, with participation from founders of well-known fintech firms including Hummingbird Ventures, QED Investors, and Nubank, Ramp, Circle, and Deel. With this, Augustus has raised a total of $210 million.
Unlike most stablecoin issuers, Augustus does not issue stablecoins. Instead, it focuses on modernizing the agent banking system that underpins international dollar transfers. Its API-first platform supports multi-channel settlement such as Swift, ACH, SEPA, and stablecoins. Augustus’s in-house core banking system, Marble, integrates AI into its back-end operations to enable real-time settlement 24/7. Augustus CEO Ferdinand Dabitz said: “The dollar is the greatest product in the world, but its distribution system has fundamentally broken down.”
Regulation is Augustus’s most important competitive moat. In May 2026, the company received conditional approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a nationwide bank charter, becoming the eighth institution to obtain this status since 2010. This charter allows it to directly connect to the Federal Reserve’s settlement channels, providing compliant and efficient dollar services to financial institutions in regions where dollar access is limited, such as Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Current stablecoin monthly trading volume has already exceeded $7.5 trillion, with a market value of about $316.7 billion, but the underlying settlement still relies on traditional agent banking infrastructure that is slow to operate and shuts down over weekends. Augustus is trying to fill this critical gap with a model of “licensed banks + stablecoin-native + AI-driven.” The $180 million funding round is not only a bet on a single company, but also a strategic vote for the track of “stablecoin-era settlement infrastructure.”
