Anthropic will pay $1.5 billion to authors — a record copyright settlement in the US

A federal judge in San Francisco approved a settlement between Anthropic and a group of authors who accused the company of using their books without permission to train the Claude chatbot. The $1.5 billion amount became the largest in US history for copyright cases.

This is the first major settlement in the wave of lawsuits against AI companies accused of unauthorized use of protected content. The precedent is expected to pressure other industry players — OpenAI, Google, Meta — that still have similar cases unresolved.

For Anthropic, valued by investors at tens of billions of dollars, the payout represents substantial operating costs, but it also helps eliminate legal uncertainty around Claude’s training data and focus on competing with market leaders.
