Japanese media: AI infrastructure investment drives hidden liabilities; America’s five biggest tech giants’ off-balance-sheet debts have reached $1.65 trillion

On July 21, according to a study by *Nikkei News*, figures show that, boosted by large-scale AI infrastructure investment, the off-balance-sheet hidden liabilities of the United States’ five biggest tech giants have surged eightfold within four years. Their total scale has climbed to $1.65 trillion, far exceeding the combined stated on-balance-sheet visible debts of the five companies, which total $1.35 trillion—significantly raising the difficulty of identifying market risks.

This survey covers five major companies: Alphabet, the parent company of Google; Microsoft; Amazon; Meta; and Oracle. So-called hidden liabilities specifically refer to future payment obligations that are not reflected on the balance sheet. They mainly stem from non-standard liabilities such as long-term procurement contracts for high-end GPUs, long-term data-center leasing, and AI infrastructure partnership “backstop” commitments. These are only disclosed briefly in the notes to financial reports—compliant but highly concealed—making them easy to mask companies’ true financial pressure.

In terms of specific companies, Meta’s hidden-liability risk is the most prominent, with a scale of $420 billion, about three times its on-balance-sheet debt, mainly arising from large-scale co-built data-center leasing and partnership backstop agreements;

Meanwhile, Oracle’s hidden liabilities have skyrocketed 30-fold over four years to $27.33 billion, coming under significant pressure from major project investments such as OpenAI’s Stargate AI data centers.

Industry insiders warn that, because AI hardware iterates quickly and depreciates rapidly, if subsequent industry demand falls short of expectations, the vast amount of idle infrastructure could trigger asset impairment. Coupled with forward payment obligations concentrated around maturity, this could spark a corporate liquidity crisis—and also conceal risks from hidden liabilities.

However, given that Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet together hold $1.45 trillion in cloud business and project reserve order backlogs, relevant parties believe that these investments are backed by real business needs, rather than being purely speculative behavior.

What do you think? Will the trillion-dollar bet on AI infrastructure ultimately help tech giants win the future, or will hidden liabilities drag them into a swamp? Let’s discuss in the comments.
