The London Stock Exchange to Launch an Independent Overnight Trading Platform in the First Half of 2027, Benchmarking the Crypto Market to Compete for Retail Funds
According to a report by The Financial Times, London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) plans to roll out an independent overnight trading segment in the first half of 2027. The core aim is to win back retail investors who have been lost and directly take on competition from crypto trading platforms that operate nonstop 7×24 hours.
This overnight trading market will be operated separately from the LSE main board. The trading hours in London time will be from 17:00 to 07:50 the next day, with a daily 30-minute pause from 18:30 to 19:00 to complete end-of-day clearing.
At the same time, the exchange’s major trading segments will keep the existing regular trading hours of 8:00 to 16:30 unchanged. In the initial launch phase, it will only offer exchange-traded products (ETPs), including index funds tracking stock indexes from the UK and the US.
Judging from industry trends, traditional markets are fully adapting to retail investors’ demand for around-the-clock trading. In particular, Nasdaq was approved in April 2026 to offer 23-hour trading across five trading days per week, and CME has also launched crypto derivatives for 24/7 trading.
LSEG executives said that retail investors today prefer round-the-clock trading. Extending trading hours can not only meet their needs to allocate UK and US assets across time zones, but also follow market trends, while giving investors more flexible choices of trading time zones.
