The two sides’ reciprocal attacks on civilian and military facilities have continued to escalate. Since fighting reignited a week ago, at least three (possibly four) U.S. service members have been killed. In a brief phone interview with NewsNation on Sunday, Trump said he “doesn’t care” about Iran’s announcement that it would no longer comply with a bilateral understanding memorandum reached a month earlier. A U.S. official familiar with internal government discussions said, “The U.S. is planning a larger-scale war,” adding that the Pentagon is increasing the number of military aircraft in the region. However, the official also warned that any expansion of U.S. military operations will face multiple constraints: air-defense and long-range ammunition inventories are becoming increasingly tight, and due to battle damage, the ability to rapidly deploy more troops and aircraft to the region is also limited.
