Bitcoin, or BTC, is the world’s first cryptocurrency created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. BTC runs on blockchain technology: a decentralized digital ledger without bank intermediaries. BTC transactions are verified by miners using proof of work, and then recorded permanently in blocks. The total supply of BTC is limited to only 21 million coins, making it anti-inflationary. BTC can be sent globally 24 hours a day with relatively low fees. Many people call BTC digital gold because of its scarcity and resistance to censorship. The price of BTC is highly volatile, influenced by adoption, regulation, and market sentiment. Today, BTC is used as an investment tool, a hedge, and a payment method in some places.
