The British Financial Times cited reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping previously criticized Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during a summit in Beijing with U.S. President Donald Trump, saying he was pushing for re-militarization—an emerging form of militarism.

According to the report, Xi Jinping and Trump had fierce exchanges over issues including Japan’s continued increases in defense spending, which caught U.S. officials by surprise. Sources said that the criticism of Japan was the most intense part of the summit. Since Japan-related issues were not raised in the bilateral talks before the summit, U.S. officials were caught off guard.

The Financial Times said Trump told Xi Jinping that, as the threat from North Korea was worsening, Kishida had no choice but to take a tougher stance on security issues.
