Honestly, over the years in the crypto market, I have seen so many people who lost money from the same mistake.
It's about the classic price manipulation that everyone calls pump-and-dump.
A dump is when insiders massively sell assets at inflated prices, leaving regular traders with losses.
But let's figure out how this scheme actually works and why it's so hard to notice.
Usually, it all starts quietly.
Fraudsters silently buy large volumes of some little-known coin, then start creating hype on social media, Telegram chats, and forums.
They spread positive rumors, promise quick growth, and skillfully use FOMO.
When the crowd starts biting the bait and actively buys, the price really soars.
Demand increases, orders fill up, and the chart goes to the sky.
And just then, insiders exit their positions.
They sell everything they bought at the beginning at these inflated prices.
The predictable result: the price drops, volumes evaporate, and newbies are left with devalued assets in their portfolios.
How to recognize that you're being scammed?
The first sign is an abnormal jump in price without visible reasons.
The coin is flying up, but there are no news or project updates.
Just out of nowhere.
The second sign is a sharp spike in trading volume.
If the price and volume grow simultaneously, it could be a manipulation signal.
The third is paying attention to sources of advice.
If unknown people on the internet strongly recommend you to buy urgently so you don't miss the opportunity, that's a red flag.
What exactly should you do to protect yourself?
First, always check the project team, its roadmap, real achievements.
Reliable projects are transparent and ready to answer questions.
Second, be skeptical of promises of quick wealth.
Serious investments are based on fundamental analysis, not hype.
Third, diversify your portfolio.
Don't put all your money into one asset, especially if you see signs of manipulation.
It's better to trade on large, reputable exchanges that have systems to detect fraudulent activity.
At least there is some control there.
And constantly follow crypto news.
Being informed is your best protection.
Remember, regulators are increasingly fighting such schemes, and that only benefits honest investors.
In the end, pump-and-dump is not a new phenomenon, but it still works on inexperienced traders.
The main thing is not to panic, do your homework, and not believe miracle advice from the internet.
If you learn to see the signs of manipulation and stick to a sensible approach, your risk of falling for scammers will significantly decrease.
The market will always be there, but your money is your responsibility.
