I just found out that the most expensive currency in the world is not the pound or the euro, but the Kuwaiti dinar! 1 Kuwaiti dinar can be exchanged for 3.26 dollars. Following are the Bahraini dinar (2.65 dollars) and Omani riyal (2.60 dollars). Interestingly, most of these countries are major oil producers with strong economies and persistent current account surpluses.

Although the British pound is old and influential, it is not the highest-valued currency. Currently, it exchanges for only 1.33 dollars. The Swiss franc, considered a safe haven, is not much more expensive (1.21 dollars). Despite being a major global currency, the euro's highest value against the dollar is the lowest on the list (1.13 dollars).

What’s interesting is that the most expensive currencies are not solely determined by the size of the economy but also depend on pegging to other currencies, financial stability, and capital inflows. When choosing which currency to hold, one must consider the country's credibility, not just whether the currency is expensive.
