I recently remembered this notorious scam case again and thought it necessary to give a reminder. The name ружа игнатова should be familiar in the crypto community; she is the person who created the OneCoin scam, which is still studied as a textbook-level financial fraud.
It's quite ironic to say the least. This woman comes from a good background, born in Bulgaria in 1980, moved to Germany at age 10, and even earned a Ph.D. in International Law from the University of Constance. She previously claimed to have worked at McKinsey. But such a seemingly glamorous background became her best cover for deception.
In 2014, ружа игнатова launched OneCoin, aggressively promoting it as a strong competitor to Bitcoin. She traveled around the world, scamming investors from over 100 countries, promising astronomical returns, and falsely claimed that the currency was supported by blockchain technology. As a result, this scam directly stole $4 billion, with some estimates reaching as high as £12.9 billion in losses. In 2016, she even boldly said that in two years no one would be talking about Bitcoin, which now looks like a joke.
In October 2017, she disappeared on a flight from Sofia to Athens. Since then, no one has seen her again. The FBI listed her as one of the Top Ten Most Wanted in 2022, offering a $5 million reward. Europol is also searching for her, but their bounty is only £4,100, which was mocked by netizens as being too stingy.
The current situation is that this woman may be hiding somewhere with a fake passport. Some say she might have undergone plastic surgery or was simply eliminated by the mafia. Others speculate she is hiding in Russia or Greece, accompanied by armed bodyguards. The most heartbreaking part is that even after being exposed as a scammer, OneCoin is still continuing to deceive people in parts of Africa and Latin America, with the number of victims still growing.
This story was later turned into a BBC podcast called "The Disappearing Crypto Queen," which also sparked a series of documentaries and investigative reports. ружа игнатова's case actually tells us that high education combined with no bottom line, plus a precise grasp of greed, can cause enormous disasters. Although her tactics have been exposed, similar schemes are still repeating in the crypto world. So, for projects that promise outrageous returns but have nothing, you still need to be extra cautious.
