Have you ever stopped to think about how many movies about cryptocurrencies explore this universe creatively? I was browsing recently and was surprised by the amount of interesting content that has come out in recent years about Bitcoin, blockchain, and all of that.
I started with thrillers. If you enjoy suspense, Crypto (2019) is the kind of movie that mixes Wall Street with crypto conspiracy. A banker discovering money laundering through digital currencies – it’s quite engaging. There’s also The Great Bitcoin Heist (2016), which is lighter, like Ocean’s 11 but with Bitcoin. Action, comedy, and technology all together.
Now, if you really want to dive deep, documentaries are another story. Machine Trust: The History of Blockchain (2018) by Alex Winter is one of those that really makes you understand where the technology is heading. It’s not just about finance – it talks about humanitarian efforts, industry transformation, the real potential.
For those who want to learn the history from the beginning, The Rise and Fall of Bitcoin (2014) is essential. It shows the journey of the early adopters, the miners who believed when no one else did. Banking on Bitcoin (2016) is also good for understanding the regulatory hurdles the space faced.
There are some quite different ones too. StartUp (2016-2018) is a series that mixes drama and tech thriller set in Miami. The story of creating a digital currency amid the criminal underworld is quite intense. The Gospel of Bitcoin (2015) is more philosophical – it explores why some people see crypto as freedom, with Roger Ver bringing that perspective.
One that caught attention was Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King (2022), that Netflix documentary about Gerald Cotten and QuadrigaCX. Real mystery, $250 million missing, it’s pretty chilling. Bitcoin: Beyond the Bubble (2018) also raises interesting questions about whether Bitcoin is a bubble or the future of money.
The more recent movies about cryptocurrencies also show new perspectives. Crypto Rush (2020) focuses on the rise of women in the crypto space, which is nice to see. Deciphered (2021) is quite satirical, like a dark comedy about someone trying to find Satoshi Nakamoto.
What I find cool is that these movies about cryptocurrencies cover everything – from education to pure entertainment. You learn about blockchain, about the real challenges, about the people behind it all. If you’re a crypto fan, investor, or just curious, there’s something for everyone on this list.
My suggestion? Start with Banking on Bitcoin if you want to understand the context, then jump to Trust No One if you want something more exciting. Afterwards, explore the others according to your vibe. Which one do you think you’ll watch first?
