Deep Tide TechFlow News, May 13 — According to The New York Times, OpenAI opened its first lobbying office, “Workshop,” in Washington this week, just a few blocks from the White House, aiming to promote policies such as data center expansion and free use of copyrighted content. In the first quarter of 2026, OpenAI’s federal lobbying expenditure reached $1 million, doubling year-over-year. Competitor Anthropic also opened an office in Washington this April, with lobbying spending last year increasing tenfold year-over-year to $3 million.

Meanwhile, Meta, Nvidia, and Alphabet together spent a total of $47.8 million on lobbying last year, a 22% increase. According to the civic watchdog Public Citizen, currently one-quarter of federal lobbyists in Washington are involved in AI issues, a significant rise from 11% in 2023.
