According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal in the United States, billionaire Elon Musk’s space technology exploration company SpaceX is in talks with Google regarding a collaboration on space orbital data centers.

SpaceX is actively expanding its business of deploying orbital data centers in space. If an launch agreement is reached with Google, the two companies will establish a partnership to jointly compete in the orbital data center sector.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has stated that space data centers, a technology not yet tested by the market, is the next frontier for SpaceX. It is also a core focus that SpaceX plans to promote to investors before going public this summer, with expectations that SpaceX will become the largest IPO in history.

The report states that Google has also contacted other rocket launch companies to explore computing power collaborations in space orbits, including partnering with Planet Labs to build satellites. Last year, Google announced a space data center construction project called “Project Suncatcher,” aiming to launch prototype satellites by 2027.

Regulatory documents show that Google is an early investor in SpaceX, holding a 6.1% stake. Google executive Don Harrison is a member of SpaceX’s board of directors.
