Microsoft CEO testifies in court, Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman continues to be heard
BlockBeats News, May 12 — According to CNBC, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified on Monday at the U.S. Federal Court in Oakland, California, participating in the trial of Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman.
In the lawsuit, Microsoft is also listed as a defendant. Musk accuses Microsoft of “assisting and participating” in OpenAI’s violation of its charitable trust obligations, claiming that its non-profit mission has been diluted through commercialization.
Court documents show that Microsoft has been continuously investing in OpenAI since 2019, with a total investment exceeding $13 billion, and has played an important strategic investor role as OpenAI shifted to a “non-profit + profit” structure. Microsoft’s further $10 billion investment in OpenAI in 2023 has sparked additional controversy.
Musk stated during the trial that this investment was a key turning point where OpenAI deviated from its original non-profit mission, and accused OpenAI’s management of benefiting from the charitable structure. Meanwhile, the trial also revealed some recent tensions in the relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft, though both sides still maintain core cooperation and are adjusting and restructuring their model and cloud service agreements.
The case is still ongoing, with disputes over the governance structure and commercialization path of artificial intelligence companies continuing to ferment.
