You know, I discovered something fascinating about the greatest empires in the world throughout history. It's crazy to see how the sizes vary greatly depending on the period.
The British Empire ranks first with 35.5 million km², making it the largest empire in the world by territory. Next, the Mongol Empire with its 24 million km² remains impressive, closely followed by the Russian Empire with 22.8 million km².
In Asia, the Qing Dynasty covered 14.7 million km², while the Yuan Dynasty controlled 11 million. The lesser-known Xiongnu Empire stretched over 9 million km².
On the Western side, the Spanish Empire dominated with 13.7 million km², and France, with its second colonial empire, claimed 11.5 million. It's interesting to note that the largest empires in the world were not always the oldest.
In the Muslim world, the Abbasid Caliphate and the Umayyad Caliphate each occupied about 11.1 million km², placing them among the largest territorial entities of their time.
What really intrigues me is the map of the Roman Empire at its peak in 117 AD. Although it doesn't top this list, its influence and duration remain remarkable. When you look at the evolution of these greatest empires in the world, you realize that territorial dominance was a constant obsession.
