What is happening in Sudan continues to be truly concerning. On Saturday, the WHO confirmed an airstrike against a teaching hospital in El Daein, the capital of eastern Darfur, late Friday night. The numbers are severe: 64 dead, including 13 children, and nearly 90 injured, according to available sources. The pediatrics, obstetrics, and emergency departments were completely devastated—practically, the hospital is no longer operational.

The war in Sudan has now been going on for more than three years, since April 2023. Eastern Darfur is controlled by the RSF, the Rapid Support Forces, a local paramilitary group. What’s interesting is that there are different versions regarding responsibility for the attack: the RSF say it was carried out by government forces, and the government denies everything. But the Associated Press reported that two government military officers admitted that the target was a nearby police station.

This is a classic of what happens in the Sudan war—attacks that hit civilians and critical infrastructure. A teaching hospital is not only a medical facility: it is a training center, and now it is out of service. It’s difficult to say how many lives will be at risk in the coming days due to a lack of adequate medical care. The humanitarian situation in that region continues to worsen.
