Just caught Kroger's Q4 earnings and honestly the numbers are pretty solid. EPS came in at $1.28, beating estimates, and what really caught my eye was the e-commerce sales jumping 20% year over year. That's some serious momentum in digital. Total sales hit $34.7 billion, gross margins expanded to 23.1%, and their free cash flow nearly doubled to $3.4 billion. Not bad for a mature retailer in a tough environment.

What's interesting is how the company is managing costs while still investing in digital. Pharmacy and omnichannel fulfillment are clearly paying off. The guidance for fiscal 2026 shows identical sales growth between 1-2%, which is modest but realistic given the headwinds they're facing. They're also returning cash to shareholders through buybacks, which is always a good sign.

If you're looking at the broader retail space, I've been watching some other plays too. Mama's Creations is showing crazy momentum right now with mama quotes from analysts highlighting 39.9% sales growth and 44.4% EPS growth expected. That's the kind of upside you rarely see in this sector. They've been crushing earnings surprises too, averaging 133% on a trailing four-quarter basis. Costco is another solid pick if you want stability, and Ollie's Bargain Outlet has been quietly delivering with 16-17% expected growth. The whole retail landscape is shifting toward e-commerce and efficiency, and these companies seem positioned to benefit. Kroger's execution on digital is definitely worth monitoring if you're thinking about retail exposure.
