According to the Los Angeles Times, Evan Tangeman, a 22-year-old man from Newport Beach, California, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison with 3 years of supervised release for money laundering by a young scam gang called the "crypto kids." Prosecutors said the group used "social engineering" to impersonate staff from exchanges like Coinbase and Gemini to trick victims into giving up account information, stealing over $263 million in crypto assets; Tangeman admitted to assisting in laundering at least $3.5 million and helping rent luxury homes. His rewards included luxury cars such as Lamborghini and Porsche. Law enforcement seized a 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost and a Porsche GT3 RS at his residence and said he instructed accomplices to destroy electronic devices after some members were arrested.
