To strengthen the ecological protection and restoration work in Tibet and further solidify the national ecological security barrier, the National Development and Reform Commission recently issued the “Tibet Ecological Security Barrier Protection and Construction Plan (Revised).”
It requires that by 2030, Tibet’s forest coverage rate reach over 12.61%, the comprehensive vegetation cover of grasslands exceed 50%, soil and water conservation rate increase to 92.22% (excluding freeze-thaw erosion), natural protected areas account for more than one-third of the region’s land area, and ecological environment quality steadily improve.
The plan will optimize the ecological security barrier system, implement projects such as ecological protection and restoration of the Qiangtang Plateau in northwest Tibet; improve the natural protected area system, and orderly promote the creation of national parks characterized by high-altitude ecosystems and mountain permafrost zones.
