From the 25th Universe Experiment, see clearly the ultimate outcome of lying flat: this is why we cannot afford to lie flat.

Many people say life is too exhausting, competition is too苦, it's better to lie flat and pass the days, stay away from competition, live a stable life. But if you truly completely lie flat, give up competition, give up responsibility, give up the vitality that life should have, what will be the final outcome?
The 25th Universe Experiment from half a century ago has long provided the answer with the most brutal results. This experiment, seemingly creating an "animal utopia," is actually filled with warnings about "lying flat," and is worth every person wanting to lie flat to read repeatedly.
25th Universe: A "Lying Flat Paradise" Without Pressure
In 1968, ecologist John Calhoun built a perfect closed space, named the 25th Universe, a paradise designed specifically for mice:
Unlimited food and water sources, constant comfortable temperature, clean living space, no predators, no survival crises. Here, mice do not need to forage, avoid danger, and theoretically can survive and reproduce without pressure, living the most "comfortable" life.
At the start of the experiment, he introduced 4 pairs of healthy mice. Initially, the mouse population rapidly reproduced, thriving with vitality, everything developing toward an ideal state. But when the mouse numbers reached their peak, the attitude of lying flat spread, and the entire group began to head toward destruction.
When mice began to lie flat, the utopia turned into doomsday.
In an environment with absolute material abundance and no survival pressure, the mouse group exhibited terrifying behavioral decline, gradually falling into the abyss of lying flat:
1. Male mice lie flat, completely give up competition
Dominant mice occupy territory and resources, weak male mice no longer compete, socialize, or court. Their only daily activities are eating, sleeping, and grooming, turning into outwardly clean and pretty "beautiful mice," but with no fighting spirit for survival. They completely withdraw from group competition, indifferent to everything, living as numb "lying flat" individuals.
2. Female mice lie flat, give up reproduction and responsibility
Originally responsible for nurturing offspring and guarding the nest, female mice also start to slack off. They become irritable and refuse to mate or reproduce, even abandoning their young, no longer fulfilling maternal duties. The entire group's reproduction halts completely.
3. All members lie flat, leading the group toward extinction
Without competition, responsibility, or survival goals, the entire mouse group sinks into decline. Even with unlimited food and comfort, the mouse numbers plummet sharply, with no new force, adult mice lacking vitality. Ultimately, in 1973, the last mouse dies, and the 25th Universe is completely destroyed. A perfect utopia, because everyone lies flat, ends in extinction.
The cruelest part of this experiment is: it was not survival pressure that destroyed them, but complete lying flat and meaningless comfort that wiped out the entire group.
The Warning of the 25th Universe: Humanity Must Never Lie Flat
The mice in the 25th Universe are very much like many people today who want to lie flat: avoiding involution, giving up effort, lowering desires, just wanting to stay in their comfort zone and live an effortless life. But the experiment has long proven that complete lying flat is never salvation, but self-destruction. This is the fundamental reason why we must never lie flat.
Lying flat erodes the will to survive, causing people to lose the value of life.
The "beautiful mice" in the 25th Universe, with unlimited food, live without meaning. They have no pursuits, no goals, just mechanical existence. Once a person fully lies flat, it’s similar: gradually losing the motivation to learn, grow, strive; abandoning self-improvement, giving up chasing dreams, day after day falling into numbness. It may seem like avoiding pressure, but in fact, it’s self-destructing one’s life value, living as a soulless shell.
Lying flat causes people to abandon responsibility, ultimately being abandoned by life.
After mice lie flat, they give up reproduction and protecting the group, leading to the group's extinction. But we living in the world are never isolated individuals; we have parents to support, family to protect, and social responsibilities to bear. Choosing to lie flat is actively shirking these responsibilities. It may seem easy for a moment, but over time, it will gradually erode your footing. When life demands you to shoulder everything, you will be powerless.
Lying flat will drain vitality, leading individuals and groups into decline.
The root of the 25th Universe’s destruction is the entire group losing vitality. Complete lying flat leads to total decline. For individuals, lying flat causes you to lose the motivation to improve, falling behind peers; for society, as more people choose to lie flat, the society will lose its drive to move forward and fall into stagnation. The world we live in is never a utopia without struggle; only by maintaining a fighting spirit can we avoid falling into the trap of "behavioral decline."
In conclusion
It’s okay to occasionally pause and rest to relieve fatigue, but never fully lie flat and give up on life.
In the 25th Universe, mice have unlimited material supply but head toward extinction because of lying flat; we do not have a built-in utopia, all stability must be fought for ourselves, and we have no capital to lie flat.
Don’t let temporary comfort ruin lifelong possibilities; don’t let escapist lying flat become the end of life. Maintaining fighting spirit, shouldering responsibility, and growing towards the sun are the only ways to resist decline and live out oneself.
