Gate News, April 28 — Mara CEO Peter Thiel announced on Monday the establishment of the non-profit organization Mara Foundation, reflecting the company's strategic commitment to supporting the long-term health, resilience, and adoption of the Bitcoin protocol. The foundation will focus on quantum-resistant Bitcoin technology, including research and development of post-quantum wallets and proposals such as BIP 360. According to the foundation's official website, quantum computing does not pose a direct threat to Bitcoin, but given the deliberate upgrade cycles of the network, early preparation is crucial. The organization will support the development of quantum-resistant tools to defend against potential future risks, protecting elliptic curve cryptography used in some Bitcoin addresses. The foundation will also allocate resources to ensure Bitcoin's long-term security budget. As mining subsidies continue to halve every four years and eventually cease, miners will increasingly rely on transaction fees for income. The foundation aims to support the development of a robust fee market to ensure Bitcoin remains economically secure. As one of the largest Bitcoin miners by hashpower and the fourth-largest Bitcoin holder by corporate holdings, Mara is amplifying advocacy through broader initiatives via the foundation, including multilingual education for global audiences, expanding access to self-custody tools, and outreach to policymakers and stakeholders.
