Fed Study Finds U.S. Programmer Job Growth Fell 50% After ChatGPT Launch

Federal Reserve economists Leland D. Crane and Paul E. Soto found U.S. programming job growth fell about 50% after ChatGPT launched in November 2022. The study estimates roughly 500,000 developer jobs that otherwise might have existed were never filled, and the hiring gap did not appear until mid-2024.
