Let's talk about tonight's meditation under the big tree, reflecting that "Investing is a dialogue with time."
At eleven o'clock at night, the city gradually quiets down. I bring my yoga mat and arrive under the thickest tree in the community park. This tree is at least dozens of years old, with rough bark and lush branches and leaves. Under the glow of the streetlamp, it casts mottled shadows.
Sitting cross-legged, closing my eyes, taking deep breaths. The night air carries the fresh scent of grass and trees, with occasional sounds of insects and frogs croaking in the pond. At this moment, it feels as if only I and this tree exist in the world.
During meditation, thoughts often drift far away. Tonight, they drifted toward investing.
Isn't investing just like this tree?
Rooted downward is the accumulation of understanding.
The tree's roots, buried deep underground, unseen by others, determine how tall it can grow and how long it can live. It silently absorbs nutrients and water from the soil, regardless of whether the weather above is favorable or droughts and floods occur.
The "roots" of investing are our understanding of the industry, the company, and the essence of business. It’s the countless nights of reading, thinking, researching, and the investment frameworks and principles we establish. This part of the work is dull, long, and yields no immediate returns. Like the roots of a tree, we don’t rejoice if they grow by just one millimeter today. But it’s these invisible "roots" that determine whether, when a market storm hits, our portfolio will be uprooted or remain steady.
Growing upward is patience and waiting.
A tree doesn’t become a towering giant overnight. It goes through seasons: sprouting in spring, flourishing in summer, shedding leaves in autumn, and hibernating in winter. It’s not in a rush; it simply follows the rhythm of nature, with annual rings marking each year.
The "growth" of investing is the power of compound interest. It takes time and patience. When we buy a good company, it’s like planting a seed. We can’t expect it to bloom and bear fruit tomorrow. We need to give it time to grow along with the company’s development. Market fluctuations, like the changing seasons, are inevitable. Bull markets are summer, full of joy; bear markets are winter, with everything bleak. But true investors understand to hibernate in winter, sow in spring, rather than chase highs in summer or panic in autumn.
Lush branches and leaves are a reflection of vision.
When a tree grows tall enough, its branches and leaves extend into a broader sky, providing shade for more people. Its value is no longer just itself but its impact on the entire ecosystem.
The "lush branches and leaves" of investing represent our investment perspective and vision. When I stop only focusing on daily gains and losses and start thinking about how investing aligns with social value and the trends of the times, my perspective broadens. What we invest in is no longer just code and numbers but the future we believe in. This outlook helps us stay clear-headed amid market noise, remain fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.
As the meditation ends, I open my eyes and look at this silent big tree in front of me. It still stands quietly, as if nothing has happened, yet it feels as if I just had a profound conversation with it.
Investing might just be such a dialogue with time. We learn patience from time, understand natural laws from nature, and find peace within ourselves.
May we all be like this tree—rooted downward, growing upward, living as we wish in the river of time, and reaping the generous gifts that time offers.
