Sam Altman apologized after OpenAI did not alert police about a ChatGPT account linked to the suspect in the February Tumbler Ridge mass shooting that killed eight people. OpenAI said it banned the account in June 2025 for activity tied to the furtherance of violent activities, but the company decided the case did not meet its threshold for a credible or imminent threat of serious physical harm.
