On April 26, local time, U.S. President Trump, during an interview, gave a detailed account of the situation at the scene when the shooting occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Trump said that when the gunshots first rang out, he did not immediately realize how serious the threat was—“wasn’t worried”—and instead hoped to observe what was happening on site first. He said that at one point he did not cooperate with the Secret Service’s rapid evacuation, “wanted to see what was happening,” and admitted that this behavior may have, to some extent, slowed the pace of the security personnel’s response. As the situation gradually became clearer, the Secret Service ordered him to take protective measures immediately. Trump said that, following the instructions of the security personnel, he and First Lady Melania lay down and took cover, and were then escorted out of the dinner area and transferred to a safe location.
