I just found out that today marks the 20th anniversary of the first tweet in history. It was on March 21, 2006, when Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, wrote those iconic words: "just setting up my twttr." It sounds simple, but that message changed everything.
What’s interesting is that this tweet became a unique digital artifact. It is archived in the Computer History Museum and has its own Guinness World Record. But what surprised me the most was discovering that its NFT version sold for nearly $2.9 million in 2021. Yes, you read that right. An NFT of a tweet. At the time, it seemed crazy, but looking at it now, it was a pretty prophetic way to recognize the historical value of that moment.
Since then, Twitter has undergone brutal transformations. Elon Musk bought it and renamed it X. The platform has changed a lot, facing competition from Bluesky and Threads, but it remains a hub of tech debate.
It’s fascinating to see how a simple message from 2006 became an internet icon. And the fact that someone paid millions for its NFT version says a lot about how we value historical moments in the digital age. If you’re interested in this type of digital asset, Gate has interesting options to explore the NFT market.
