U.S. Navy Evaluates Frigates From South Korea, Japan, Turkey for Potential Foreign Procurement

According to USNI News on September 1, the U.S. Navy is evaluating guided-missile frigates from South Korea, Japan, and Turkey as candidates for overseas procurement. The three designs under consideration are South Korea's Chungnam-class frigate, Japan's export version of the FFM Mogami-class frigate, and Turkey's Istanbul-class frigate. U.S. Navy officials must complete their assessment by November 12, with the potential strategy involving construction of up to two vessels at a foreign shipyard before transitioning production to a U.S. facility.
