ByteDance Rejects Knowledge Distillation as AI Shortcut, Willing to Lag Behind Rivals Short-Term

According to Beating, ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming stated last month that the company will not use knowledge distillation as a shortcut to catch up with rival AI models, willing to accept a temporary lag behind domestic competitors. He asked teams to sacrifice short-term gains for long-term objectives. Knowledge distillation, which trains new models on outputs from stronger models, reduces training time and computational costs. However, ByteDance cited political risks related to its TikTok operations facing U.S. government scrutiny, expressing concern that adopting distillation could draw fresh Washington pressure.
