Anthropic said in an official statement to Business Insider that it is building an internal team dedicated to chip design and developing custom chips to enable Claude to “run faster and more efficiently to meet customer-scale demand.” The company is also hiring a chief silicon engineer and for multiple chip engineering positions, with salaries ranging from $320k to $485k.
An Anthropic spokesperson said in an official statement to Business Insider that the company is establishing an internal chip design team that will co-design hardware and models with partners so Claude can “run faster and more efficiently” to meet “customer-scale demand.”
At the same time, Anthropic emphasized that it will not abandon its existing partners, planning to continue using chips from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD alongside its own hardware.
Reuters and The Information previously suggested that Anthropic was in talks with manufacturing partners such as Samsung, but Anthropic has not yet announced its foundry partner or a release date.
Anthropic’s chip design job listings reveal how it is building the team. The engineering areas for which it is recruiting include:
· Front-end design
· Pre-silicon verification
· Physical design
· Analog and mixed-signal circuits
· Packaging
Salaries range from $320k to $485k. The job listings require candidates to “make direct personal contributions” to completed and delivered semiconductor designs and be able to “make significant decisions without the support of a large organization.” They also require candidates to “support the bring-up and debugging of the first chips” after the components arrive, indicating that this is a core team expected to complete its own chip tape-out.
Anthropic’s financial scale provides a foundation for investing in in-house chip development. The company’s annualized revenue reportedly grew from approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025 to more than $30 billion in April 2026. The number of customers spending more than $1 million annually doubled to more than 1,000.
All of its computing currently relies on external chips, including AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and Nvidia GPUs. Capacity for the next-generation Google TPU has been committed for delivery beginning in 2027, reaching gigawatt scale. Anthropic’s in-house chip design capabilities would allow it to stop renting that layer of the technology stack.
Anthropic is not the first frontier AI lab to develop its own chips. In June 2026, OpenAI launched the Jalapeño dedicated inference chip, co-developed with Broadcom, claiming that it could reduce costs by up to 50%. Meta is also preparing to begin producing its own chips as soon as possible.
All of these companies share the same goal: reducing their dependence on Nvidia chips and building hardware tailored specifically to their own AI systems. For Anthropic, building a chip design team could also help attract top engineers by offering them the opportunity to build entirely new hardware from scratch as an incentive to join.
According to Anthropic’s official statement to Business Insider, developing chips in-house is intended to enable Claude to “run faster and more efficiently to meet customer-scale demand.” It would also allow Anthropic to own a critical layer of the technology stack that currently depends on external suppliers, rather than continuing to rent it.
According to the job listings, salaries for Anthropic’s chip design positions range from $320k to $485k. The company is hiring a chief silicon engineer as well as engineers in front-end design, pre-silicon verification, physical design, analog and mixed-signal circuits, packaging, and other areas.
According to an Anthropic spokesperson, the company plans to continue using chips from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD alongside its own new hardware to maintain supply chain flexibility.
