Romania Shuts Down Nuclear Reactor, Blasts Riverbed as Drought Hits Europe's Energy Supply

On Monday, Romania shut down its only operational nuclear reactor cooled by the Danube River as extreme drought gripped Europe. Romanian Navy personnel conducted controlled explosions in Izvoarele village to blast open rocks and divert more water to the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant's cooling system, according to released footage.

Low water levels in the Danube also threaten to force Hungary's Paks nuclear plant offline, which supplies approximately 40% of the country's electricity, and have prompted Serbia to cut hydroelectric power generation.
