Three Suspects Charged in $69,000 Crypto Extortion and Kidnapping Case in Netherlands, Aug. 4

According to Dutch prosecutors, on Aug. 4, three suspects appeared in court accused of kidnapping and extortion stemming from a cryptocurrency investment dispute on May 1. The suspects allegedly held the victim captive in a car near Nieuw-Vennep and attempted to extort approximately $69,000 from him through threats of violence and degradation. Younes B., 24, a martial arts instructor, was released under probation supervision on Aug. 5; his brother remains in custody. B. acknowledged wrongdoing in court, stating he should not have taken the law into his own hands.

Under Dutch law, extortion by violence carries a maximum of 9 years in prison, or 12 years if committed jointly by multiple perpetrators with severe violence. Kidnapping carries up to 8 years, while hostage-taking carries a statutory maximum of 15 years. The court scheduled the next hearing for Sept. 8, when the case could proceed to trial.
