Following last month's small-scale testing, leading US cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase announced on Thursday that it is officially offering prediction market services to all US users, marking another milestone in the company's journey to become an "All-in-One Exchange." Coinbase's comprehensive launch of prediction market services is primarily done through a partnership with Kalshi. Kalshi is a legitimate prediction market platform regulated by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), ensuring compliance. This development continues Coinbase's initial announcement last month, when the platform only opened the feature to a limited user group.
According to the statement, Coinbase's prediction markets allow users to trade on "real-world events," including political elections, sports competitions, entertainment and cultural trends, as well as key economic indicators. Users can buy and sell "Event Contracts" to bet on whether an event will occur, with the contract prices reflecting the collective market judgment of the probability of the event happening. Coinbase states that during the initial phase of service launch, all trading volume in prediction markets will be provided entirely by Kalshi. However, in the coming months, the platform plans to gradually introduce more contract products from other prediction market platforms. In terms of user experience, Coinbase emphasizes that prediction market positions can be managed directly alongside users' existing cryptocurrencies, stocks, and cash assets within the same interface. The minimum trading threshold is only $1, and transactions can be made using USD or USD stablecoin USDC, significantly lowering the participation barrier. Coinbase's full entry into prediction markets comes at a time when trading volume in this sector is rapidly expanding. According to statistics, the combined trading volume of the two major prediction platforms Polymarket and Kalshi exceeded hundreds of billions of dollars last year, and this month is expected to set new records again. Not only cryptocurrency platforms, but traditional finance and fintech companies are also accelerating their involvement. CME Group has entered the prediction market through a partnership with FanDuel; Robinhood and Webull have also incorporated prediction markets into their new product lines; even Goldman Sachs is reportedly evaluating related strategies. For Coinbase, prediction markets are not just a single product but part of a long-term strategy. The company is actively expanding its business scope, aiming to transform from a simple cryptocurrency trading platform into an "Everything Exchange" that covers stocks, derivatives, stablecoins, payments, tokenized assets, and on-chain products, thereby increasing user engagement.
