The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the London Police have just seized 7 cryptocurrency ATMs and arrested 2 people in southwest London on suspicion of money laundering and operating an illegal exchange. The FCA warns that no cryptocurrency ATMs are licensed to operate legally in the UK, and using them may aid criminal activities.
In the U.S., the state of Wisconsin proposed a law to regulate cryptocurrency ATMs to prevent fraud, hidden fees, and scams. The bill was introduced by Senator Kelda Roys and Representative Ryan Spaude after many citizens, especially the elderly, were scammed. The FBI reported that users lost $247 million due to scams related to cryptocurrency ATMs in 2023. A similar bill was also presented to the U.S. Senate in February 2025 to enhance user warnings and protections.
