Gate has officially introduced margin trading and short selling for its stock platform, allowing users to execute long buys and short sells using financial leverage. This upgrade breaks away from traditional spot-only, long-biased stock trading, unlocking expanded strategic capabilities and capital efficiency. It marks a pivotal milestone for Gate TradFi across stock trading, asset lending, and margin management. This feature is currently available on the Gate web platform and will be supported in App version 8.43.0 and above.
Through the new feature, users can borrow USDT to amplify long position sizes with lower upfront capital, thereby maximizing capital utility. Conversely, users can borrow eligible stocks to sell short, taking short positions during downturns or hedging existing portfolio risks. For traders accustomed to crypto margin trading, this integration seamlessly extends familiar margin mechanisms to traditional stocks, enabling flexible cross-market asset allocation within their existing Gate accounts, without the need for traditional brokerage setups.
To enhance user experience, Gate Stocks interface now displays dedicated margin labels and data metrics, including available long/short directions, initial/maintenance margin requirements, available long/short borrowing capacities, active borrow amounts, and reference interest rates. Orders require a secondary confirmation modal displaying relevant order information, while active orders and open positions are systematically tracked in standard order and position logs. Supported assets and margin parameters remain subject to real-time platform availability.
For account management, Gate added comprehensive tracking for margin liabilities and interest accruals, enabling users to monitor USDT loans, financing fees, and remaining margin buffer ratios in real time. Through internal fund transfers, users can move USDT into their stock accounts, where system logic automatically handles margin repayments once available balances are detected—greatly simplifying liability workflows. Furthermore, a margin trading toggle is embedded across the stocks home and account pages. By default, the feature is disabled, but users can enable it manually. To turn off margin trading, all outstanding positions must be fully settled and all pending orders must be canceled first.
This launch significantly expands Gate TradFi's service boundaries, extending stock trading into margin financing, short selling, and dual-directional strategy execution. Together with its existing line of spot stocks, ETFs, stock futures, and CFDs across gold, indices, and forex, Gate is rapidly building a comprehensive multi-asset trading ecosystem. Looking ahead, Gate will continue deepening the convergence of traditional finance and digital asset infrastructure to deliver a more efficient, flexible, and versatile global trading experience.
How to Use Stock Margin Trading?
Access Stock Trading: Users can access the Stock Trading page via the Gate Web homepage. Alternatively, update the Gate App to version 8.43.0 or later and navigate to [Stocks] under [Assets] or [TradFi] to enable margin trading.
Select an Asset & Place an Order: Choose a margin-eligible stock, check the required margin, available trading limit, and estimated interest rate. Transfer funds as needed and submit your order. Tap the "ELR" icon to check your remaining account liquidity ratio.
Manage Your Positions: View your active positions, liabilities, and accrued interest directly in your Stock Account, and repay borrowed funds or stock as needed. Account deposits automatically repay margin loans. Buying to cover a short position automatically returns borrowed stock.
