At 21:30 tonight, the U.S. October CPI will be released. For investors, this could be an unfriendly psychological test: if the data is cool, everyone is happy; if it’s hot, everyone may change their tune.
If inflation comes in above market expectations, it would mean U.S. price pressures may remain persistent. The Fed may keep interest rates high for longer, and markets may even reconsider the risk of further tightening.
That would not be good news for BTC. A stronger dollar and rising Treasury yields could lead funds to move away from high-volatility assets again. If Bitcoin has already accumulated a large number of short-term longs, concentrated stop-losses could also follow.
In U.S. stocks, tech shares are usually sensitive to interest rate changes, and highly valued companies could be hit first. Gold could also come under pressure as the dollar and real yields strengthen.
However, don’t equate hot data directly with a market crash. What really affects the market is the gap between the data and market expectations, as well as how the bond market reprices.
If the market has already priced in the bad news, a hot CPI reading could instead trigger a rebound.
So, tonight’s biggest risk isn’t high inflation—it’s thinking the market is ready, only to find that it isn’t!$SPCX
