US Equities: Assessing the AI Sector After a Sharp Correction

The US stock market recently experienced significant volatility. The Nasdaq Composite dropped by roughly 5.5%, briefly entering correction territory, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index saw a steep 12% decline. Key chipmakers like $NVDA and $AMD faced heavy selling pressure.

Beyond routine profit-taking, the primary driver behind this sell-off was growing investor skepticism regarding the pace of AI data center construction, massive capital expenditures, and the timeline for future returns on investment. The market is currently questioning whether the high growth expectations for the AI sector need to be repriced.

The Rebound and Market Rotation

Following the heavy sell-off, we observed a strong bounce back in major technology and semiconductor names as buyers stepped in to buy the dip. $AMD jumped over 11%, $MU gained more than 5%, and $INTC rose nearly 8%. $NVDA recovered by almost 3%, and $TSLA added over 4%.

However, it is important to note the divergence. While chip stocks and certain high-beta tech names rallied, some mega-cap tech giants like $AAPL, $MSFT, and $AMZN remained slightly in the red. This indicates that the recovery is not uniform and suggests a rotation of capital rather than a broad market rally.

What to Expect Next Week

1. Macroeconomic Data: The market's direction will heavily depend on upcoming economic reports, particularly inflation (CPI/PPI) and labor market data. Any signs of persistent inflation could reignite fears of prolonged high interest rates, putting pressure back on the tech sector.
2. Sector Rotation and Valuation: Investors will continue to scrutinize AI capital expenditures. If chip stocks stabilize, the next wave of opportunities may shift toward software, cloud providers, or defensive sectors if market volatility persists.
3. Earnings Guidance: Markets will be highly sensitive to forward guidance from major tech players. Companies that cannot justify their AI spending with clear revenue projections may face further downside.
4. Technical Levels: The market will test whether the recent rebound represents a true bottom. If major indices and tech leaders hold their support levels, we may see a gradual recovery. If volatility returns, expect a retest of recent lows.

The AI narrative is not broken, but the market is entering a phase of higher scrutiny and valuation checks.
