The Nasdaq plunged 5.5% on Thursday, the semiconductor index tumbled about 12%, and popular stocks such as Nvidia and AMD fell sharply.
Now comes the question investors are struggling with most: Should we buy the dip in chip stocks, switch to tech giants, or even retreat into safe-haven assets?
My ranking is: prioritize tech giants with strong cash flow, wait for quality chip stocks’ valuations to recover, and use defensive assets to reduce risk.
Why?
Chip stocks’ advantage is long-term growth in AI demand, but their biggest short-term issues are valuations and expectations for capital spending. If data center construction slows, the market may continue lowering earnings expectations. A big drop doesn’t mean they’re cheap right away.
Giants like Microsoft, Google, and Apple have mature businesses, huge customer bases, and relatively stable cash flow. Even if AI investment cools, they won’t be relying solely on an AI story.
As for safe-haven sectors, I’d look at consumer staples, utilities, and short-term U.S. Treasuries. However, defensive sectors also carry valuation and interest rate risks; you can’t just buy them and put your feet up.
The move I’m most opposed to is seeing AMD fall 17%, immediately thinking it’s such a steep discount, and jumping in with your eyes closed.
Investing isn’t grocery shopping; discounted goods aren’t necessarily worth more than they cost.
The most important thing now isn’t to chase a rebound, but to pick companies that can truly weather the cycle. #每周来晒 and #美股史诗级抛售 $MU
