If AI is the brain of the future, semiconductors are the infrastructure underpinning the entire tech industry.
Lately, I’ve been keeping a close eye on semiconductor ETFs. The reason is simple: almost every tech upgrade, from AI servers and smart cars to data centers and high-end electronic devices, depends on chips.
I’m bullish on the semiconductor industry’s long-term prospects. Rising demand for AI computing power could benefit areas such as advanced process nodes, memory chips, and packaging and testing. Meanwhile, growing global focus on semiconductor supply chain security could also drive continued investment across the industry.
Compared with betting on a single chipmaker, I think semiconductor ETFs offer some risk diversification, since they can cover multiple companies across the supply chain.
That said, the industry has its own temperament. Semiconductors are cyclical: when demand is strong, companies ramp up capacity, but once that capacity comes online, oversupply may follow. Technology shifts, trade restrictions, and equipment supply issues can also create uncertainty.
So I won’t blindly buy just because AI is in the picture. What really deserves attention is industry orders, inventory changes, capacity utilization, and corporate earnings.
My approach is to track the industry’s health over the long term and build a position in stages, rather than rush in at the market’s most euphoric moment and get left holding the bag.
The chip industry does have a future, but investors need patience, too.
Are you bullish on semiconductor ETFs, or would you rather buy a leading stock like Nvidia directly?$NVDA
