#CPI数据前瞻 #广场交易达人 #WCTCS9 Countdown to CPI Night: 77% Rate Hike Bets Await a Verdict, Three Scenarios for BTC, U.S. Stocks, and Gold

At 21:30 Beijing time on November 10 (Tuesday), U.S. October CPI will be released.
This is no ordinary inflation data release—it is the final gate before the Fed's December meeting.

【First, take stock】
September CPI rose 0.6% month over month, its biggest increase in five months; year over year, it was up 3.7%. Core CPI rose 0.3% month over month and 2.6% year over year, rebounding across the board and exceeding expectations, with energy prices the main driver.
The just-released nonfarm payrolls were even stronger: employment increased by 165,000 in October, more than twice market expectations, and the unemployment rate fell to 4.1%. After the data came out, traders' bets on a December rate hike jumped to around 77%.
In other words, the market has already treated a "rate hike" as the most likely outcome. This CPI report has just one question to answer: Will the data confirm those 77% odds, or prove them wrong?

【Three scenarios, three outcomes】
Scenario 1: CPI exceeds expectations again (core CPI up ≥0.3% month over month, or above 3.8% year over year)
A December rate hike is virtually locked in. U.S. stocks come under pressure, with the Nasdaq and tech stocks most sensitive—remember that just last Thursday they suffered a 5.5% plunge in a single day, and market sentiment remains fragile; Bitcoin follows them lower, with leverage amplifying the losses; gold faces pressure from higher real rates and a stronger dollar, but if the market reads high inflation as "out of control," gold could also see safe-haven buying.
Scenario 2: CPI meets expectations
The odds of a rate hike stay around 75%-80%, with limited marginal impact, and the market's focus shifts to the December meeting itself. Some believe that meeting expectations despite high oil prices is, in itself, a kind of positive.
Scenario 3: CPI cools significantly (core CPI up ≤0.2% month over month)
Rate hike bets cool rapidly, and risk assets rebound: Bitcoin has the most upside, followed by U.S. stocks, while gold also benefits from expectations of lower real rates.

【Historical clues】
June CPI exceeded expectations: the three major U.S. stock indexes fell 1.6%-2%, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 3.7%, and gold came under pressure.
July CPI posted its first negative growth in six years: rate hike bets plunged, and both U.S. stocks and gold rose.
August CPI met expectations: U.S. stock futures climbed, and gold rose.
September CPI exceeded expectations: a rate hike became almost certain, but Bitcoin moved higher against the trend.
The conclusion is clear: CPI's direction determines rate expectations, but each asset's reaction is not mechanical—especially Bitcoin and gold, which often move "unexpectedly."

【My take: It's a bet on the "expectations gap"】

The market has already priced in a 77% chance of a rate hike, so "meeting expectations" would have the smallest marginal impact. The real volatility lies at the extremes: if CPI cools, there is plenty of room for a rebound; if CPI exceeds expectations again, the downside is just as significant amid fragile sentiment after AI stocks were just hammered.
Volatility ranking: Bitcoin > Nasdaq > gold. Gold is the least reactive; its direction depends on whether the market reads high inflation as "higher rates" or "inflation out of control."

【Before the opening bell, watch these four indicators】

First, month-over-month core CPI—the main reason for September's jump was energy, and core CPI, which excludes energy, is key to rate hike pricing;
Second, rents and core goods—which determine whether inflation is "sticky";
Third, the change in December rate hike odds after the data release—77% is the baseline anchor;
Fourth, the 2-year Treasury yield and BTC funding rates—the former sets the direction, while the latter indicates the risk of a leveraged liquidation cascade.

CPI night is never short on volatility; what's scarce is a sense of direction. Rather than guessing whether prices will rise or fall, watch the expectations gap.

Which side are you betting on? Will CPI cool, or will it exceed expectations again?
