The most interesting thing about stock investing is that everyone can make a compelling case. Some look at candlestick charts, some follow the news, and others closely study the expressions of financial bloggers.
But if I were judging whether a company is worth following over the long term, I’d rather look at five signals.
First, revenue: Is the business continuing to expand? Second, profit: Is its ability to make money improving? Third, cash flow: Is the money it earns real cash? Fourth, debt: Is its financial structure healthy? Fifth, competitive advantage: Does its product have a moat?
Cash flow in particular is like a company’s health checkup report. The income statement can tell stories, but cash flow can help you see a lot of realities clearly.
However, even if all five signals look good, that doesn’t mean you should buy right away. You also need to consider whether the valuation is reasonable and whether the market has already priced in growth for the next few years.
The investment approach I dislike most is when you haven’t even figured out the company, but the stock price has already gotten you excited.
Good companies are worth researching, and good prices are worth waiting for. A truly mature investor doesn’t have to trade every day, but knows when to act and when to stay put.
Which of these five signals do you think investors are most likely to overlook?$NAS100
