What’s the most interesting thing about the AI industry? Technology is still advancing at a breakneck pace, but companies’ wallets may run dry first!
Goldman Sachs has raised its forecast for U.S. data center construction spending, projecting it will reach $125 billion in 2028. Strong demand from cloud providers and a backlog of projects continue to provide support, showing that the long-term story of AI infrastructure construction isn’t over yet.
But don’t get too excited—data centers are no easy business.
Building data centers requires land, electricity, cooling systems, and expensive equipment, with massive upfront investment. More troubling, it can take a long time from investing the money to starting operations and generating stable returns.
This creates a tough problem for highly leveraged developers: they’ve already borrowed the money and bought the equipment, but the projects haven’t started making money yet.
If regulatory approvals tighten and construction timelines stretch, companies’ financing pressures could increase further.
So Goldman Sachs being bullish on data center construction doesn’t mean it’s bullish on every data center developer.
The industry is likely to diverge: companies with deep pockets and long-term customer contracts will be better able to weather the cycle, while firms with limited financing capacity may be forced to sell assets or even exit the market.
The future of AI may be bright, but not everyone building data centers will live to see the dawn.$AMD
