The U.S. Is Starting to Focus on AI Safety! Are Giants Like OpenAI, Google, and Meta Facing Greater Regulatory Scrutiny?

Artificial intelligence has created enormous opportunities for tech companies, while also raising new challenges for safety governance.
The U.S. Democratic Party recently proposed a policy direction to strengthen AI regulation, planning to advance legislation related to independent testing, corporate accountability, and data center energy costs.
Previously, leaders of a U.S. House Democratic committee also sent letters to companies including Anthropic, Google, Meta, and OpenAI, requesting information on safety incidents involving frontier AI models and proposing ongoing reporting requirements.
Some of the requirements include reporting to Congress within 48 hours of discovering relevant safety incidents.
This shows that U.S. lawmakers have begun focusing on unexpected behavior by AI models during testing, as well as companies’ current safety monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
These regulatory discussions also have real-world implications for ordinary users. Is information generated by AI reliable? Could models exhibit dangerous behavior? What responsibility should companies bear?
These questions are no longer just a topic of discussion among technical experts.
However, the letters and policy plans do not mean that companies have already been found to have violated the law. Specific requirements will still need to be determined through formal processes.
The more powerful AI becomes, the less safety governance can be treated as an afterthought.$MU
