The U.S. Job Market Refuses to Give In! Nonfarm Payrolls Far Exceed Expectations—Is a Fed Rate Cut Now Further Out of Reach?
Markets were hoping for a rate-cut rainstorm, but the U.S. job market delivered a heatwave instead.
The U.S. added 165k jobs in October, far exceeding expectations of 65k. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, while average hourly earnings rose 0.4% month over month.
These figures show that the U.S. labor market remains remarkably resilient.
For the Fed, a labor market that is too weak means it needs to consider rate cuts to support the economy; but if employment remains strong and wages grow relatively quickly, cutting rates too soon could reignite inflation.
This creates an awkward situation: a weak economy is a problem, but a strong economy may not be ideal either.
After the data was released, the probability of a rate hike in December rose to 77.7%, and market expectations for monetary policy shifted noticeably.
However, don't treat a single nonfarm payrolls report as the whole answer to what policy will look like. Employment data may be revised, inflation may change, and the Fed will still need to weigh all the factors.
For ordinary investors, instead of guessing the Fed's next move every day, it's better to closely watch changes in the dollar, Treasury yields, and gold.
After all, the market won't change direction just because of your prediction.#WCTCS9
