The most surreal thing has happened: AI data centers are still expanding, yet memory chips have suddenly been hit by a sell-off. It’s like a restaurant still has customers lining up, but the chef is suddenly told their pay is being cut.
What exactly is the market worried about?
First, whether AI capital spending can keep growing. Giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are investing heavily, but investors are starting to ask: when will all that money actually turn into profits?
Second, how much longer memory prices can keep rising. If NAND and DRAM prices enter a phase of slower growth, the market may lower its future earnings expectations ahead of time.
Third, whether valuations have already priced in too much growth. Even if companies deliver good results, a pullback wouldn’t be surprising if their share prices have already reflected several years of good news.
SanDisk, Micron, and SK hynix don’t have exactly the same fundamentals, but they all face the same test: AI demand must translate into real orders and cash flow.
So, I won’t get excited just because a stock is down 10%, or panic just because it’s down 20%. The biggest risk in investing isn’t missing a rebound—it’s mistaking a cyclical peak for a golden buying opportunity.$MU
