As soon as the U.S. nonfarm payrolls data was released, the forex, gold, bond, and stock markets sprang back into action.
The U.S. added 165k nonfarm jobs in October, far exceeding market expectations, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.1%. The report sent a signal to the market: the U.S. labor market remains resilient.
After the data was released, the U.S. Dollar Index rose about 0.7% at one point, and Treasury yields also moved higher. Market bets on a Fed rate hike in December gained ground.
What does this mean for different assets?
First, the dollar. Strong employment data could support the dollar as markets reassess the U.S. interest rate outlook.
Next, gold. Gold does not yield interest, so it could face some pressure when the dollar and Treasury yields strengthen.
Now, U.S. stocks. Strong employment supports corporate earnings and consumer spending, but if high interest rates persist, tech stocks and high-valuation assets could come under pressure.
So this payrolls report is neither simply bullish nor bearish; it’s a repricing across assets.
What the market fears most is neither good data nor bad data, but a sudden shift in expectations.
Investors had prepared for a rate-cut scenario, but reality handed them a guide to the possibility of rate hikes.
The dollar has its swagger back, gold is under pressure, and U.S. stocks are watching interest rates. This payrolls report has certainly kept global markets busy!$AMD
