Apple's decline on Thursday was relatively contained among the tech giants, and that was no coincidence. Q4 revenue came in at $114.48 billion and EPS at $2.10, both above expectations. iPhone revenue grew 17% year over year, while Services revenue hit a record $31.57 billion. On the same day Nvidia and AMD were dragged into the abyss by AI-trading fears, Apple's strong cash flow became its greatest defensive asset.
But Apple's problem isn't in its current-quarter results; it's in the gap between its gross-margin guidance and its AI narrative. Gross margin guidance for next quarter is 45%–46%, below the market expectation of around 47%. The company explicitly attributed this to an “unprecedented” rise in memory chip prices and costs from ramping up Siri AI investment. In other words, AI is a cost item for Apple in the short term, not a revenue item.
The deeper risk was laid out clearly by Gene Munster: personalized AI agents are reshaping the user interfaces of consumer technology. Meta's Muse and SpaceX's Grok Bot are already in motion, while Munster called Apple's response to the “agentic AI” competitive landscape “the biggest risk to its ecosystem.” Evercore maintains a $380 price target, implying about 14.5% upside, based on iPhone resilience and cash flow. But there is no answer yet as to whether this thesis can withstand the potential diversion of traffic from the App Store and Services revenue by AI agents.
My view: Apple is a defensive holding in the current environment, not an offensive one. Its cash flow means you won't be forced to sell in a panic, but until the underlying uncertainty around AI agents is resolved, there needs to be a very strong reason to chase the stock. #Gate股票畅聊季
