On Thursday, U.S. stocks suffered an epic sell-off, with the Nasdaq down more than 5% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down more than 12%, as AI and chip stocks tumbled across the board. Tech stars once chased by investors are now taking spectacular dives from their highs.
What exactly happened? AI hasn’t disappeared, data centers haven’t stopped working, and chips haven’t all gone on strike. What has really changed is investors’ expectations for the future.
As massive AI investments continue to grow, the market naturally asks: Can revenue growth keep pace? Can profits cover the costs? Are these investments gold mines or expensive money-burning machines?
Meanwhile, some investors may be starting to seek defensive assets with stable cash flows and reasonable valuations.
This correction doesn’t necessarily mean the AI era is over, but it may mean the days when hype alone could send stock prices soaring are changing.
