The market had expected the US labor market to continue cooling, but ADP turned in a report that was anything but cooperative.
The data showed that the US private sector added 86,000 jobs in October 2026, exceeding market expectations. This means business hiring activity still has some support, and the US labor market is not giving up easily.
For investors, this figure is about more than just the job market. The stronger employment is, the more likely household income and consumption are to remain resilient; at the same time, however, inflationary pressures could prove more persistent.
That is exactly what gives the Federal Reserve the biggest headache: if the economy is too weak, it has to step in, but if the economy is too strong, it may not dare to cut rates.
On wages, ADP data showed that employees’ base pay rose 3.2% year over year, while overall pay increased 4.7% year over year.
This means workers’ incomes are still growing, but businesses are also facing considerable costs.
Next, the market will need to assess the rate-cut path by weighing US Bureau of Labor Statistics employment data, inflation data, and the Federal Reserve’s statements. After all, rate cuts are no wishing well: the Fed may not give the market what it wants. $FLOKI
