The Fed’s biggest headache right now may not be an economy that’s too weak, but one that’s holding up too well! If the labor market continues to show resilience and consumer spending and wages remain strong, inflation could prove harder to bring down. That would naturally fuel discussion of a December rate hike. But rate hikes aren’t decided by a show of hands based on employment figures alone; the inflation outlook, financial conditions, and the economy’s ability to withstand higher rates also matter. Strong employment is a point in favor, but it’s no direct notice of a rate hike. The market needs a holistic assessment, not a collective burst of excitement over one good number.
