On November 4, the semiconductor sector surged 11.26%, with multiple ETFs hitting their upper limit, making it look like “the cycle is back.” But zoom out on the chart, and A-share semiconductors have been in a sustained correction for more than a month, triggered by factors including a slowdown in memory price increases, weaker expectations for domestic capacity expansion, and panic selling driven by fund flows.
There is one thing that’s easy to confuse here: industry conditions have not turned, yet stock prices have already gone through a round of declines. Overall, memory manufacturers’ third-quarter results beat expectations. Samsung and SK Hynix respectively forecast that the DRAM supply shortage would persist through 2028 and 2029, while SK Hynix’s LTA agreements already cover more than 50% of its planned capacity for 2027–2028. Leading semiconductor equipment companies have full order books, with delivery schedules extending into the first half of 2027. Fundamentals are improving, but stock prices are being driven by fund flows and sentiment.
The implications for risk management are straightforward: you can’t equate “strong industry conditions” with “you can buy at any time.” Industry conditions tell you the direction, not the timing. When the sector plunges for reasons unrelated to fundamentals, countercyclical segments (equipment, materials, and domestic substitution) can offer some downside protection; but when the sector surges 11% in a single day on a sentiment recovery, the volatility you take on by chasing it has nothing to do with the industry’s fundamentals.
My approach is to use the size of the pullback, rather than the gain, to determine position size. For sectors with confirmed strong conditions, the deeper the decline and the greater the gap between expectations and reality, the more worthwhile it is to act; chasing after a single bullish candle is for those willing to take on greater volatility. Risk management doesn’t mean being bearish; it means treating “being bullish” and “finding an entry point” as two separate things.
